Over the summer, work began on the renovation of the softball and baseball fields along Greensburg Pike on our high school campus. This long-awaited project also includes the creation of a competition area for our track and field team, which has been using space at Wilkins Elementary to conduct events like the javelin, shot put, discus, and more.
One of the primary reasons for the overhaul of the fields was to improve drainage and improve the grading of the surface underneath the turf. This has been an extensive process that needs to be done carefully to ensure minimal maintenance issues arise once the fields are complete.
Wet weather earlier this summer made an impact, but with the extended dry weather of late, the construction team has made a lot of progress with grading the playing fields and installing the drainage system. In the weeks ahead, the competition field area will start to take shape and the turf will be ordered for the baseball/softball field.
Attached is a rendering of the baseball/softball field. One addition that isn't reflected in the drawing is the placement of the WH logo behind the pitcher's circle and pitcher's mound on both fields.
As fall progresses and the turf is put into place, the construction team will also install a scoreboard, ball catcher sleeves, and remaining storm-water controls, hydroseed the competition throwing area, and work on the curbs and pavement.
We're excited to provide our baseball, softball, and track and field teams with an improved playing experience this spring. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during this construction process.
