Chamber choir, advanced choir, and jazz band shine at winter concert

Thursday night was the second of two WHSD Department of Music high school holiday concerts, and this special evening featured the advanced choir, chamber choir, and jazz band.

The advanced choir opened the show under the direction of Dr. Alicia Scaramuzzo and student teacher Mr. Ryan Comisky. Their first few selections featured pieces like "Journey On" by Derrick Fox, "Gloria, Gloria" by Roger Emerson, and "Sweet Silent Night" by Andy Beck. Those songs were followed by the classic "Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel," which was arranged by PINKZEBRA. The choir finished their performance with a rendition of the Jonas Brothers' "Like It's Christmas," featuring a solo by Zoe Wisnik.

The jazz band took the stage next under the direction of Mr. Robert Carr and they wasted no time before jumping into variations of a pair of popular songs - Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" and Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." Vocalist Livia Rocco joined the band for a rendition of George and Ira Gershwin's "Embraceable You" before the band spun back to pop culture and turned on the TV with "Song From M*A*S*H."

Three holiday tunes wrapped up the jazz band's set - "A Christmas Mambo;" 'This Christmas," which featured vocalist Alexia Abernathy; and "Big Band Holiday."

The chamber choir closed out the show with a variety of selections, beginning with Alan Billingsley's arrangement of Johnny Marks' "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and Bryan Sable's arrangement of "Riu Riu Chiu." Next came a rendition of Duncan Sheik's "Mama Who Bore Me" and Greg Gilpin's arrangement of "An Angelic Christmas Medley," which featured soloists Calise Cowans and Alexia Abernathy.

The choir wrapped up the evening with Donald Fraser's "This Christmastide" and the traditional "Silent Night," the latter of which featured alumni joining in.

Thanks to all who attended to support our student musicians and who helped make these concerts possible. Don't forget to check out the sixth and seventh graders at Dickson next Wednesday at 7 p.m!
